Description
Methane is the simplest organic compound. Methane, as the main component of conventional natural gas, shale gas, flammable ice, etc., is a very important carbon-based resource. It is one of the most important non-CO2 greenhouse gases. In the stratosphere of the atmosphere, methane is broken down into water vapor (clouds), causing the destruction of the ozone layer. The abundance of methane on Earth makes it an economically attractive fuel, although capturing and storing it is hard because it is a gas at standard temperature and pressure.

Typical Application
1)As a Fuel: Methane is used as a fuel for ovens, homes, water heaters, kilns, automobiles, turbines, and other things. It combusts with oxygen to create fire.
2) In the Chemical Industry: Methane is converted tosynthesis gas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, by steam reforming.
3)Rocket propellant: Refined liquid methane as well as LNG is used as a rocket fuel.
4)Refrigerant: As a refrigerant, methane has the ASHRAE designation R-50.
