Important methylating agent for the production of methylcellulose, hydroquinone dimethyl ether, methyl mercaptan, cacodylate, etc. It is also used to prepare dichloromethane, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, trimethylbutane and methylchlorosilane, and tetramethyl lead. It can also be used as a solvent for refrigerants, foaming agents, rubber, resins, and organic compounds. It is used as a local anesthetic in medicine.
