Description
Ethane is an organic compound, a colorless and odorless gas, insoluble in water. The content of ethane in some natural gases is 5% to 10%, second only to methane; and it exists in a dissolved state in petroleum. Ethane is commonly used as an outdoor fuel and refrigerant. Like many hydrocarbons, ethane is isolated on an industrial scale from natural gas and as a petrochemical by-product of petroleum refining. Its chief use is as feedstock for ethylene production.
