Description
Sulfur dioxide (chemical formula SO2) is the most common, simplest, and irritating sulfur oxide. The gas is ejected during volcanic eruptions and is also produced in many industrial processes. Since coal and petroleum often contain sulfur, they produce sulfur dioxide when burned. Among the various consumption areas of sulfur dioxide, pulp and paper are the most promising. It is a kind of low-pressure liquefied gas, which is colorless and transparent gas with pungent odor. Soluble in water, ethanol and ether. Sulfur dioxide gas is mainly inhaled through the respiratory tract and has local irritation and corrosive effects. Its toxicity is roughly the same as that of hydrochloric acid.
