Electronic Grade Fluorine (F₂) Market Expands as NF₃ Supply Crisis Accelerates Adoption
Fluorine gas (F₂) is a powerful oxidising agent that has long been used in semiConductor manufacturing for chamber cleaning and etching. Its recent resurgence is linked to the NF₃ supply shortage and the need for more environmentally sustainable alternatives.
Applications and Uses
In semiconductor fabs, F₂ is primarily used for cleaning CVD and ALD chambers by reacting with deposited films to form volatile fluoride compounds. It is also employed in plasma etching of silicon and tungsten. F₂ is often generated on‑site through electrolysis of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, avoiding the hazards of high‑pressure gas transportation. Purity levels for electronic grade F₂ are typically 5N (99.999%) or 6N, with impurities like moisture and metals controlled below 0.1 ppm.
MArket Conditions and Shifts
The global electronic grade F₂ market grew from USD 880 million in 2025 and is forecast to reach USD 1.45 billion by 2032, at a CAGR of 7.4%. Growth is accelerated by the NF₃ supply gap — with NF₃ prices surging over 200%, many fabs are switching to F₂ for chamber cleaning, even though F₂ requires higher safety investments. The shift is also supported by environmental regulations, as F₂ has zero GWP, compared to NF₃'s GWP of 17,200.
Technology Transition: On‑Site Generation vs. Cylinder Supply
Historically, F₂ was shipped in toxic, high‑pressure cylinders, limiting its use. The development of on‑site electrolysis generators has transformed the market, enabling safe, continuous production at the fab site. This approach also reduces inventory and transport costs. Major gas companies such as Linde and Air Liquide offer complete on‑site F₂ generation systems, which are now being installed in new fabs in China and Taiwan.
Regional Outlook and Investment
Asia‑Pacific dominates F₂ consumption, with China leading capacity additions. In 2026 alone, three new on‑site F₂ projects were announced in China. Domestic suppliers like Jinhong Gas and Yoke Technology are investing in F₂ purification and generator manufacturing, aiming to capture market share. The tight NF₃ supply is expected to keep F₂ demand strong through 2028, with prices holding above USD 25,000 per ton for 5N grade.
