Ethane (C₂H₆) — Import Prices Tumble on Diverging Supply Channels, Cost Advantage Expands
THeglobal ethane markethas entered a phase of sharp divergence in Q2 2026, with import prices trending downward even as U.S. domestic prices remain subject to natural gas volatility. AcCording to Bloomberg data cited in industry research, the 2026 ethane market performed relatively weakly overall, with the price center of gravity shifting lower. In the first quarter, ethane feedstock prices averaged approximately 23.39 cents per gallon, down 14.4% year-on-year and 11.7% quarter-on-quarter.
Import Costs Decline Sharply. In China, the average landed price for liquefied ethane in Q1 2026 was 3,582.38 RMB per ton, down 5.06% from Q4 2025 and 13.52% from Q1 2025. The downward trend deepened in May. By May 8, 2026, import ethane values had fallen to approximately 1,137 RMB per ton—a striking decline that has pulled down overall market valuations.
Diverging Supply Channels. The price divergence stems from two fundamental shifts in the global supply picture. On one hand, U.S. ethane prices softened due to moderating natural gas prices as mild weather curbed heating demand. On the other, Asian buyers have increasingly secured alternative supply from Russian ethane sources, bypassing Middle Eastern routes threatened by geopolitical instability.
Widening Cracker Economics. The price divergence has significantly expanded the ethylene-ethane spread—the key margin indicator for ethane cracker profitability. As of January 14, 2026, the spread widened from approximately 480 USD to 554 USD per ton, directly benefiting operators with ethane-based cracking assets.
Case in Point: Satellite Chemical. China's Satellite Chemical has emerged as a major beneficiary of this trend. With raw material costs under control while ethylene product prices surged, the company's ethane cracking advantage over conventional naphtha routes expanded to approximately 4,000 RMB per ton. This structural cost advantage supports projections of significantly enhanced 2026 profitability for ethane-based producers.
Outlook. Ethane import prices are expected to remain competitive relative to naphtha, reinforcing the cost advantage of U.S.- and Russian-sourced ethane over traditional feedstocks. However, potential supply disruptions in Middle East LNG flows introduce an element of uncertainty that bears close monitoring.
