Hexafluorobutadiene Surges 35%-70% in 2026, 3D NAND "Etching Scalpel" Spot Prices Hit USD 550,000/Ton
If tungsten Hexafluoride is the "price champion" of the 2026 electronic specialty gas market, then hexafluorobutadiene (C₄F₆) is undoubtedly the runner-up.
Hexafluorobutadiene, also kNOwn as perfluorobutadiene, is an indispensable key electronic specialty gas in advanced semiconductor manufacturing, with purity requirements exceeding 99.999% (5N). It is known as the "etching scalpel" for memory chips — a core etching gas for high-stack 3D NAND, HBM (high-bandwidth memory), and 7nm/5nm advanced processes.
Price trends clearly reflect the market's tightness. From January to March 2026, 5N+ high-purity electronic grade hexafluorobutadiene long-term contract prices remained stable at USD 300,000-330,000/ton; prices rose to USD 360,000-380,000/ton in April; and further climbed to USD 410,000-520,000/ton in May-June, with spot prices for supplies reaching as high as USD 550,000/ton — cumulative gains of 35%-70% year-to-date. High-purity electronic grade hexafluorobutadiene (5N and above) has become one of the largest-gaining varieties in the 2026 electronic specialty gas sector, exhibiting a sustained unilateral upward trend throughout the year.
Behind the price surge lies a severe supply-demand imbalance. On the supply side, only 3 companies globally can stably mass-produce 5N high-purity hexafluorobutadiene — Haohua Technology, Japan's Kanto Denka, and Germany's Linde. Global capacity stands at approximately 2,100 tons/year, of which Haohua Technology accounts for 1,200 tons/year (5N+), representing about 57% global market share; Japan and South Korea together account for approximately 600-700 tons/year. Japanese and Korean producers have been continuously reducing capacity and have no plans for expansion due to high environmental emissions (extremely high GWP), high costs, and certification difficulties. On the demand side, as 3D NAND stacking layers evolve from 128 layers to higher levels, material consumption per chip increases exponentially. Global demand exceeds 2,000 tons, while effective supply is only about 1,200 tons — a gap of approximately 40%.
In terms of industry structure, Haohua Technology is the only enterprise in China with large-scale production of 5N high-purity hexafluorobutadiene, which has become the company's second-largest source of electronic specialty gas profits. Industry analysts believe that spot shortages of high-purity products will persist, overseas supply gaps cannot be filled in the short term, and prices show no signs of retreat.
