Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF₆): From Power Insulation to Semiconductor Etching, Electronic Grade Market Shows Steady Growth

2026-07-09

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) — a gas renowned for its excellent insulation properties in the power industry — also plays an important role in semiConductor manufacturing.

According to the latest research from QYResearch, global electronic-grade high-purity sulfur hexafluoride market sales reached USD 275 million in 2025 and are projected to reach USD 316 million by 2032, at a CAGR of 2.1% during 2026-2032. In the Chinese market, electronic-grade SF₆ reached RMB 192 million in 2025.

SF₆'s applications in semiconductor manufacturing are based on its high chemical stability, strong electronegativity, and ability to generate highly active fluorine radicals, making it a key specialty gas for plasma etching, chamber cleaning, and other dry process applications. As the scale of integrated circuits continues to expand and process technologies continue to evolve, demand for electronic-grade SF₆ is steadily growing.

In terms of domestic pricing, electronic-grade SF₆ ex-factory prices range from RMB 54,000-62,000/ton, with relatively stable supply-demand dynamics. Similar to carbon tetrafluoride, SF₆ currently faces pressure from demand falling short of expectations, with market prices mostly trading on the weak side.

In terms of industry deployment, Nanda Optoelectronics has established a fluorine-containing electronic specialty gas expansion project in Shandong, including SF₆ production. With the continued development of China's semiconductor industry and the deepening of electronic specialty gas import substitution, the electronic-grade SF₆ market is expected to maintain steady growth.
