Nitrogen is a single substance formed by the element nitrogen, with the chemical formula N₂. It is a colorless and odorless gas at normal temperature and pressure. Nitrogen is the 30th most abundant element on Earth. Considering that nitrogen accounts for 4/5 of the atmosphere, or more than 78% of the atmosphere, there is almost an unlimited amount of nitrogen available.

  Nitrogen has many medical applications. Liquid nitrogen is often used for low-temperature anesthesia to reduce bleeding and patient pain during surgery. ‌In addition, nitrogen is also used to make environmental modifiers for superconducting materials.

  Nitrogen is often used in food packaging to preserve freshness and corrosion, and to extend the shelf life of food by replacing oxygen in the packaging.
